Animal activists I need help! - Does "faux" leather really mean non-animal, despite the authentic smell & feel

of the materials? I know nothing about leather, suede, etc, but I know it has a distinct smell & texture. I want to be sure that a handbag I'm purchasing is not made of anything other than manmade materials. Their website says "faux". Should I believe it? Thanks!
